Sophie’s police stop

Below is Sophie’s attempt to fit in, gone terribly awry:

Kristen was called to the police station where Sophie was being held for questioning:

“Tell me what happened, young lady. This is so upsetting,” Kristen said.

“I got stopped by the police driving home from the party. They searched the car. They found some marijuana, bottles of liquor, and a couple pipes (drug paraphernalia),” Sophie explained.

“Oh, my God. Now you’ve done it. Now you’ll have a (criminal) record,” Kristen said.

“But I wasn’t driving high. I was the designated driver,” Sophie explained.

“Designated driver for whom?” Kristen asked.

“I can’t tell you that,” Sophie said.

“The police said you were the only one in the car. They saw some kids running away before they stopped you?” Kristen asked.

“Yeah. Everyone jumped out and ran away when we saw the police car,” Sophie said.

“You have to give the police their names,” Kristen said.

“I can’t do that, Mom. They are my friends. I can’t rat them out,” Sophie explained.

“So your friends just left you to deal with the police and take the blame? What kind of friends would do that?” Kristen asked.

“I think a couple of them are on probation. They would go to jail if I turned them in. I can’t do that to them,” Sophie said.

“They did it to themselves, Sophie. It isn’t your job to protect them,” Kristen said.

“If I turn them in, everyone at school will know I betrayed them,” Sophie said.

“So what are you going to do?” Kristen asked.

“They are threatening me with jail. They found drugs in the back seat that I didn’t know about. They said they’ll charge me with intention to sell. I’m no dealer Mom. I was just the designated driver,” Sophie began to sob.

“I told you not to get involved with those no-good kids,” Kristen said.

“They’re my friends,” Sophie said.

“The officer told me that if you give them the names, all the charges against you will be dropped,” Kristen said.

“They are going to bribe me to be a snitch?” Sophie reacted. “Not only will I lose my friends, I’ll probably get beat up.”

“I think they are going to lock you up and make you think about it,” Kristen said.

“Can’t you and Dad get me a lawyer and get me out of here?” Sophie pleaded.

“Your Dad is on the way. You can ask him if he has any better ideas,” Kristen said.
